With warming temperatures and longer days on the horizon, we can’t help but start counting down the days to spring. Although Texas is blessed with mild winters, there’s nothing quite like springtime.
With March just around the corner, it’s time to start thinking about your plans for Spring Break in Texas this year!
If you’re itching to get away for a few days, but aren’t keen on fighting traffic or paying exorbitant prices for plane tickets. Why not spend your Spring Break in the neighboring Texas Hill Country? From hiking trails to quaint historic towns, there’s no shortage of family-friendly activities to enjoy.
Located about an hour outside of Austin, Willow Point Resort is the perfect destination to unplug from work and spend quality time with your friends and family. With lakefront cabins and plenty of outdoor activities, it’s no surprise spring is a popular time here. We’ve rounded up a few reasons why there’s no better place to make the most of your Spring Break than deep in the heart of Hill Country.
Marvel at the Beauty of the Bluebonnets
Every spring thousands of Texans flock to the highways to snap a photo among the infamous Texas bluebonnets. While these wildflowers can be found from the rolling hills of East Texas all the way to the valleys of Big Bend, there’s no doubt that the Texas Hill Country is one of the best places to take in their beauty.
Bluebonnets typically begin blossoming towards the end of March, and although it’s only February, we’re already seeing some! Pair the warmer weather with the abundance of rain that’s fallen over the past several months. We’re expecting nothing less than a vibrant bluebonnet season this year! Blooming from March to mid-April, there’s no better time than Spring Break to take in the sights of our beloved state flower.
Although you’re sure to spot more than a few on your drive to Willow Point, we recommend heading out to a nearby wildflower field to admire them up close. Make your way to neighboring Burnet, Texas, (also known as the Bluebonnet Capital of Texas) and wander along the many dedicated bluebonnet trails.
The self-guided Texas Hill Country Wildflower Trail centers around the Buchanan Dam where you can make your way from Lampasas all the way west to Llano. Choose a time during the golden hour and get a family portrait among a sea of blue wildflowers. In this light, you’ll leave with a new appreciation for the natural beauty of our beloved Lone Star State.
Looking for that perfect shot? Be sure to ask co-owner, Gwen, where the best nearby spots are. She’s taken many amazing photos of the wildflowers over the years. Some of her best have been taken in close proximity to Willow Point!
Spend a Relaxing Afternoon on the Lake
After you’re done taking in the undeniable beauty of the Texas bluebonnets, head back to Willow Point for an afternoon of family fun on Lake Buchanan. With eleven lakefront cabins, our Resort is the water oasis you’ve been looking for.
At Willow Point, we offer a variety of daily boat rentals exclusively for our cabin guests. Whether you’re seeking some adventure or prefer something more relaxing, we have options for everyone.
Take our jet skis out for a spin or rent a kayak, canoe, or paddleboard for a more laid-back activity. Looking for something for the whole family? Our pontoon boat rentals offer a unique way to spend an afternoon out on the lake.
We’ve also added several new guided boat tours to enhance our guests’ experience. Watch a gorgeous Texas sunset from the water on our two-hour sunset cruise or take a swim beside Fall Creek Falls on our four-hour scenic waterfall tour. Whatever you desire, our tours are a great way to embrace all the natural beauty our surroundings have to offer.
Enjoy a Day of Outdoor Family Fun
Aside from our plentiful water activities, our expansive lakeside property offers limitless possibilities for outdoor fun with the family. Start your day off with a game of basketball or a volleyball match at our on-site courts. If you prefer a more leisure outdoor activity, try one of our many lawn games, including ladder ball and cornhole. These are the activities that make a great Spring break in Texas for your family!
After you’ve worked up a sweat, take a dip in Lake Buchanan. Then, spend the rest of the day relaxing in front of your lake cabin on our private sandy beach. For some all-around family fun, spend the afternoon fishing with the kids. When evening rolls around, take a moment to admire the bright orange and pink hues of a spring sunset on the lake. The sight itself is sure to bring you a calm and tranquil feeling.
For dinner, take advantage of your cabin’s private grill and picnic table, ideal for lakeside meals with the whole family. Keep the night going by gathering around the campfire and treating yourself to some delicious s’mores (we’ll provide the firewood!).
Embrace the Natural Scenery of the Texas Hill Country
Our resort’s central location makes it easy to experience everything the Texas Hill Country has to offer. Including all the diverse terrain and wildlife unique to this area. One of the best ways to spend your Spring Break in Texas is to explore one of the many State Parks. Although there are endless options that would make any outdoor enthusiast gleeful, a few of our favorites include nearby:
Inks Lake State Park
Inks Lake State Park offers nine miles of hiking trails across a diverse landscape of pink gneiss and limestone rock. Located just a 15-minute drive east of Willow Point Resort.
At about three miles long, the Park’s Pecan Flats Trail is a fantastic option for families of all ages looking to experience the best of Central Texas geology and wildlife.
Another must-see within the Park is Devil’s Waterhole. While there, you can hike around the small canyon, take a refreshing dip in the water, or explore the running waterfalls upstream.
Longhorn Cavern State Park
A visitor favorite, Longhorn Cavern State Park is only a 20-minute drive south of the Resort. The unique underground caverns make this park a not-to-be-missed destination.
Take a guided tour and get an inside look at these incredibly intricate caverns while you learn the history behind how they formed thousands of years ago.
From Indians to Confederate soldiers, the caverns themselves have had many unique uses throughout history. During Prohibition, they were even used as a speakeasy by local residents.
If you don’t mind venturing a little further, head north to Colorado Bend State Park to explore the many falls and hidden caves. Or, drive south to Enchanted Rock for the most incredible 360-degree views of Central Texas.
Visit Nearby Family-Friendly Wineries
Situated in the heart of Texas wine country, no visit to Willow Point Resort is complete without a stop at one of our many local wineries. With over 50 wineries throughout the Texas Hill Country, we’ve narrowed down a few of our favorites that are perfect for both parents and kids alike.
Torr Na Lochs Vineyard & Winery
Set atop a hill above the Colorado River Valley overlooking both Inks Lake and Lake Buchanan, a visit to Torr Na Lochs is the perfect way to unwind. Sip on wine made entirely from Texas-grown fruit while the kids snack on some cheese and crackers.
Listen to live music on the outdoor patio or take shelter from the hot Texas sun on their shaded deck or in their air-conditioned tasting room. No matter where you choose to sit, you’re sure to appreciate the breathtaking view of the vineyards in the distance.
Perissos Vineyard and Winery
A 16-acre estate surrounded by rolling hills, Perissos Vineyard and Winery is a favorite of ours. The grounds at this vineyard are absolutely stunning. Enjoy a relaxing picnic with the entire family at one of their many outdoor picnic tables.
With live music and an inviting atmosphere, this family-owned vineyard is not-to-be-missed. While you’re there, look out for nearby Falkenstein Castle! A fascinating structure in its own right, perched atop a hill towering high above the trees.
