Looking for a way to beat the heat this Summer? Lucky for you, Texas is home to plenty of lakes, rivers, and swimming holes that will relieve you from the scorching temperatures of a hot Summer day. If you’re searching for the perfect place to cool off, look no further than one of Central Texas’ most popular Summertime destinations, the Hill Country’s Highland Lakes.
Nestled in the rolling hills of Central Texas, Willow Point Resort sits along the shoreline of the largest of the Highland Lakes, Lake Buchanan. Our Texas Hill Country cabins offer you the tranquil waterfront oasis you’ve been looking for. With eleven lakefront cabins each complete with a full kitchen and private porch, Willow Point is the perfect place to leave the city behind, unwind, and cool down for the Summer.
The History of Lake Buchanan
Lake Buchanan is one of six lakes that make up the Highland Lakes system. It was also one of the first lakes to be formed after the Buchanan Dam was completed in 1938. Together with Lake Travis, the lakes function as water supply reservoirs serving more than 1 million people in the region. Aside from its important history, Lake Buchanan also serves as a popular vacation spot for nearby city dwellers.
As the largest of the Highland Lakes, Lake Buchanan spans a length of 30 miles and boasts 124 miles of shoreline. Although it’s a favorite among boaters, fisherman, and swimmers, being that the lake is so large, it never feels too crowded. And with so many different ways to enjoy it, you’ll never run out of activities to keep you busy. So, to help you make the most of your trip to the lake, we’re dishing out a few of our favorite ways to enjoy Lake Buchanan.
Spend a Day Fishing on the Lake
Lake Buchanan is well-renowned for its excellent bass fishing all year round. The underwater structure and mounds of the lake make a fantastic habitat for bass fish. The most common species of fish found in the lake include largemouth bass, white bass, striped bass, and catfish. But in Summer, the best catches are striped bass and hybrid bass.
Fishing on the lake can be done either by hiring a local guide to take you out or by casting your line right from the shore. At our Texas Hill Country cabins, you’re welcome to bring your own poles (and even your own boat!) to embark on your fishing adventure. Just remember that Texas state law requires anyone 17 years of age or older to hold a fishing license, so be sure you have one before you head out.
No poles? Don’t have a boat? No problem! There’s no shortage of wonderful fishing guides to take you out. At Willow Point, we have plenty of local fishermen that we’re happy to recommend to our guests. From fishing equipment to where to find the best catch, let the fishing pros take care of it all so you can enjoy a family-fun, worry-free outing on the lake.
Visit Local Swimming Spots
There’s no denying that the best way to cool off on a hot Texas day is by taking a dip in one of the many swimming holes scattered about the Hill Country. Luckily, Lake Buchanan is home to some local favorites including Fall Creek Falls and Devil’s Waterhole.
Fall Creek Falls
Located about twenty miles north of Buchanan Dam lies Fall Creek Falls. Towering about thirty feet into the air, the falls pour over the edge of a rocky cliff. The area is a popular destination for boaters and guided tours (including our own!) Furthermore, it also makes for a relaxing swimming spot.
Devil’s Waterhole
A popular swimming hole in nearby Inks Lake State Park, Devil’s Waterhole is perfect for the whole family to enjoy, especially after a day of hiking. The waterhole is known for brave souls to cliff jump into the sparkling blue water below, but can also be enjoyed by less thrill-seeking visitors. The water can be deep so be sure to bring a tube if you want to take a dip!
Boat Rentals and Tours at the Resort
Want to enjoy some fun on the water, but don’t have a boat? At our Texas Hill Country cabins, we offer a variety of boat rentals guaranteed to suit your needs. Our on-site rentals include a pontoon boat, Sea-Doo jet ski’s, kayaks, canoes, and stand up paddle boards! Plus, all boat rentals are exclusively for the use of our guests! Even better? Lake Buchanan has no public marinas. This means you’ll get to enjoy all the lake has to offer without it ever feeling too crowded.
Another great way to spend an afternoon on the water is by taking a Willow Point cruise with our very own Captain Kim! We offer two cruises including our Sunset Cruise and our Scenic Waterfall Cruise.
On our Sunset Cruise, guests will board a 22-foot pontoon boat and cruise around for two hours. We end the trip by stopping to watch the Texas Sunset glisten over the water.
For a bit more adventure, we recommend our four-hour Scenic Cruise to Fall Creek Falls. You’ll have the opportunity to jump in and swim right under the waterfalls! Don’t forget to bring some snacks and drinks to enjoy while on board.
Enjoy the Scenic Lake Views
When you’re not out and about cruising around the lake or casting a line, our favorite way to soak in all Lake Buchanan has to offer is right from the shoreline of Willow Point Resort. Our Texas Hill Country cabins are mere steps away from the sandy shores. Leave your phone behind, bring along your favorite book, and waste the day away relaxing by the water. Or, better yet, bring a tube and spend your time floating your worries away. With lake levels up and calm, clean water, you can enjoy a relaxing afternoon on the lake. The natural beauty of your surroundings is sure to leave you feeling refreshed and at peace.
With the days getting longer and temperatures rising, there’s no better time to escape to Lake Buchanan for a break from the Summer heat. Surrounded by rolling hills and stunning lake views, Willow Point Resort is the perfect destination to cool off this Summer.
